When our family gathers, no moment passes when we are not acutely aware of a missing presence - a missing smile, a missing laugh, a missing love. A victim of domestic violence, Sarah was found unconscious the day after Thanksgiving, but was kept on life support to save her unborn son, who was delivered a little over two weeks later. In moments that will remain bitterly sweet, we welcomed little Josiah as we said goodbye to Sarah, a beloved sister, daughter and mother to two older children in addition to the son she will never meet.
While in the midst of our personal grief, we have realized that we are part of a collective tragedy. Approximately 3 million incidents of domestic violence are reported each year in the United States. Sadly, our loss, our devastation, and our sorrow are not unique.
It is our hope that others who face fear and pain at the hands of a loved one are able to find the freedom that eluded Sarah. Our homes should be places of love, peace, safety and security – not terror and abuse.
If you are the victim of domestic violence, please reach out – for your own sake, and for the sake of your children, parents, siblings and friends who love you. There is help and hope for you.
